BJD knowledge · Beginner guide

How do BJD sizes work?

Use scale labels to start a search, then compare maker measurements. Learn which dimensions matter for wigs, eyes, clothes and shoes.

The short answer

Start here.

Treat 1/6, 1/4 and 1/3 as shopping labels, not a fit guarantee. Record the exact model and its measurements before choosing clothes, eyes, a wig or a matching body.

A scale name is a starting point

VOLKS explicitly explains that Super Dollfie body families are grouped by body size and proportions rather than a single scale rule. Names such as SD or Yo-SD belong to that maker’s range; they should not become a universal measurement chart for every brand.

Similar heights can have different bodies

These examples come from VOLKS’ own body guide. They illustrate why the complete body name matters; they are not equivalents for every 1/6 or 1/4 doll.

Match the measurement to the part

VOLKS asks owners to check actual head circumference for wigs and the relevant head opening for eyes. Height alone cannot answer either question.

  • Wig: head circumference and the seller’s cap size.
  • Eyes: the exact head’s recommended eye dimensions.
  • Clothing: shoulders, chest, waist, hips and garment opening.
  • Shoes: foot length, width and shoe interior.
  • Head/body: neck dimensions, connection and proportions.

Put it into practice

Your next steps.

  1. Exact head and body model
  2. Height plus relevant body measurements
  3. Display and storage space for the actual doll
  4. Units: centimetres, millimetres or inches
  5. Selected accessory size and opening
  6. Written fit confirmation for mixed-source parts

Common questions.

Will all 1/4 clothes fit a 1/4 doll?

Do not assume so. Compare the actual body and garment measurements.

Are the examples a universal BJD size chart?

No. They are named VOLKS examples. Other makers and body variants need their own specifications.

Sources & scope.

These guides explain common starting points. Names, measurements, included items and care instructions vary by maker and model. Follow the current maker’s instructions and confirm the exact doll’s specifications before buying, cleaning or changing parts.

We prioritise doll makers’ own information. A maker’s example describes that maker’s products; it is not a universal size or compatibility standard.
